The invention relates to a method for the production of steel or grey cast iron castings protected against wear at least over certain areas, in which hard-metal particles in powder or plate form are used as the anti-wear means, these hard metal particles being anchored under the surface of the melt solidified in a casting mould. According to the invention, the hard-metal powder is worked into a slurry used to coat the surface of the casting mould and fixed together with the said slurry on the surfaces of the mould which shape the area protected against wear, or the hard-metal plates are set with a core binder on the said surfaces, and the cast skin which forms when the melt solidifies is left unchanged after the casting has been released from the mould.
