The invention relates to a process for coating metals in order to improve the service properties, which process comprises the application of a molten metallic coating material to a solid metallic material. The metallic coating material is present as a solution in a metallic carrier material, 1. the carrier material used being a metallic material whose melting point is lower than that of the material to be coated, 2. the carrier material used being a metal which in the molten state has a limited solubility for the material to be coated and a solubility for the coating material, 3. the coating material used being a metallic material whose melting point is higher than that of the carrier material and may be higher or lower than that of the material to be coated, and 4. the coating material used being a material which forms a mixed crystal with the material to be coated at temperatures which are below the melting point of the carrier material.
