The apparatus has essentially a transport table (10), a web (11) of packaging material, devices for the continuous conveyance of this web and a cutting element (15) in order to cut off sheets of predetermined length from this web. The cutting member (15) is designed in such a way that, after the cutting operation, the rear end tongue of the particular sheet cut off is folded downwards, in order thereby to provide sufficient space to ensure that the front end of the web can continue its forward movement during the standstill of the cut-off sheet, the said rear end tongue resting partially on the cut-off sheet. <IMAGE>
