The mushroom-picking machine automatically seeks and extracts them when ready for picking and transports them away, causing no damage in the process even if they are growing crooked or in clusters. It has a thin hollow guide tube with the end bent over for a steel wire or strip, inserted in the mushroom at root level to grip it. The tube can be slewed into line with the stem before insertion of the wire etc. after which the whole is slewed about the axis of the mushroom to loosen it from the earth. The mushroom can be transported away by a picker head with fine needles inserted in the head.
