The process involves illuminating the yarn by a transmitter and feeding the light reflected from the surface of the yarn and influenced by the structure of the surface to a receiver. The light is evaluated and the light path is selected in such a way that the receiver is supplied with light exclusively from the unilluminated side of the yarn. The transmitter in the installation for the carrying out of the process is an infra-red light diode and the receiver consists of a photoelectric component, such as a photo diode or a photocopier. In the simplest of the embodiments, there is no lens on the receiving side. Although the absence of a lens cuts costs, it also results in a relatively low intensity of light on the receiver (5). The measuring field shutter (4) is located on the transmitter side and the reference diode (6) is located between a condenser lens (2) and the measuring field shutter (4).
