PURPOSE:To reduce the load of an operator, to shorten operating time, to check misinputs, and to improve document forming speed by forming a setting means for setting up the display format of a display unit and an automatic/manual display column switch. CONSTITUTION:An 1/2-column display switch K4 selects 1-column display or 2-column display at the selection of a KANJI (Chinese character) converted from a KANA (Japanese syllabary), at the display of the KANJI on the display unit or at the display of a sentence after the selection of the KANJI. The automatic/manual display column switch K5 selects automatic display or manual display corresponding to the setting of the switch K4 at the selective display of the KANJI converted from the KANA on the display unit. If the switch K5 is set up to the automatic side, 2-column display or 1-column display is automatically executed in accordance with the capacity of display of the KANJI to be selected and the selection of 1-column display or 2-column display can be also attained manually by the switch K4 as well. Consequently, the load of the operator can be reduced, the operating time can be shortened, misinputs can be checked and the documentation speed can be improved.
