Device for mechanically and hydraulically actuating a ring brake. A hollow piston 20 is guided in a cylinder 10 and is passed through by a rod divided into an external segment 30 and an internal segment 40 which are articulated. The outer segment 30 is guided in a guide piece 24 fixed to the cylinder 10 and bears on the piston 20 solely in the axial direction. The internal segment 40 carries a movement converter 44 in the form of an expansion wedge, which causes two pressure plates 50, 52 to rotate in opposite directions in a casing 12 so as to bring about a braking effect. The internal segment 40 bears in a dish 38 on the internal end of the external segment 30. The transverse components of the force exerted by the internal segment 40 on the external segment 30 during clamping of the brake are absorbed by the guide piece 24 without stressing the piston 20. <IMAGE>
