PURPOSE:To obtain the titled product having improved performance, by specifying the ratio of chloromethylstyrene and divinylbenzene used for adding to a lower alkyl-substituted phenol as a starting material using unpurified commercially available raw materials. CONSTITUTION:Divinylbenzene of 40-80% purity containing (A) chloromethylstyrene and (B) ethylvinylbenzene is used to give 50-99%, based on the total number of mol of the components (A) and (B), component (A) to be used. (C) A phenol expressed by formula I (R is 1-4C alkyl) is reacted therewith in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, preferably zinc chloride to afford the aimed product expressed by formula II (X is chloromethylstyrene residue expressed by formula III or divinylbenzene residue expressed by formula IV; n is an integer >=2). The above-mentioned reaction is preferably carried out by dropping the components (A) and (B) to the component (C) at 0-20 deg.C for 3-7hr to carry out the addition reaction and dehydrochlorinating the resultant product at 60-70 deg.C for 8-16hr.
