PURPOSE:To obtain a wear resisting cermet having superior toughness by specifying the grain size and structure of a solid solution mentioned below in a cermet consisting of a dispersed phase composed of a solid solution of composite metallic carbonitroxide of Ti, Ta, Mo and W and a binding phase of Co and Ni. CONSTITUTION:The cermet contains, as dispersed phase-forming component, 70-95wt% solid solution of composite metallic carbonitroxide of one or more elements among Ti, Ta, Mo and W and the balance binding phase-forming component constituted of an alloy mainly composed of Co and/or Ni. The titled cermet having improved toughness can be obtained by adjusting the average grain size of the above solid solution of the cermet to a fine grain of <=3mum and also by composing the structure of a single phase, and so, when preparing the above solid solution used as powdered raw material in the cermet making, the powder to be used is formed into fine grains of <=about 1.5mu average grain size and the solid solution-forming temp. is adjusted to >=about 1,800 deg.C, followed by pulverizing into <=3mu average grain size after the solid solution forming.
