PURPOSE:To improve performance of an engine especially when it is in low speed operation, by holding an opening and closing valve in its opening condition at least to the final period of an intake stroke, in the case of the engine which opens the opening and closing valve from the half way of an intake stroke to rapidly introduce intake to a combustion chamber and perform adiabatic compression. CONSTITUTION:An opening and closing valve 10, opened when a negative pressure in a cylinder 1 reaches a predetermined value, is provided in an intake passage 6b separated in each cylinder 1 of an engine, and the engine, rapidly introducing intake to a combustion chamber by the action of said opening and closing valve 10 from the half way of an intakes stroke, performs adiabatic compression. Here the engine additionally provides a means which holds an opening condition of the opening and closing valve 10 after it is opened till at least the final end of the intake stroke. And this means is constituted of a check valve 21 arranged in a communication hole 19 of the opening and closing valve 10, control valve 23 switching one chamber 16 of the opening and closing valve 10 to a closing condition and an opening condition to the atmosphere, spring urging said valve 23 in its closing direction and a passage 25 introducing a negative pressure opening said valve 23.
