PURPOSE:To obtain a needle coke suitable for use as a starting material for artificial graphite electrodes and having a high quality in a high yield, by bringing a raw material comprising hydrogenated coal tar into contact with an oxygen-contg. gas at a specific temp., followed by coking. CONSTITUTION:In producing a pitch coke from a raw material comprising a hydrogenated coal tar, the raw material comprising a hydrogenated coal tar is oxygen-treated by bringing it into contact with an oxygen-contg. gas at a temp. in the range of 150-400 deg.C, followed by coking. A preferred raw material comprising a coal tar is a tar pitch. Although the tar pitch may be any of a soft pitch having a softening point of 70 deg.C or below, a medium pitch having a softening point of 70-85 deg.C and a hard pitch having a softening point of 85 deg.C or above, the soft pitch is preferable from the standpoint of handleability. The degree of hydrogenation is generally in the range of 15-70%, preferably 25-60% in view of the degree of denitrification.
