The invention relates to a dedicated-line-free communications system for transmission of speech and/or data information between communications terminals, said terminals being interconnectable within the communications systems through the joint use of the power supply mains. The extension lines (NAL) are separated via hybrid circuits into transmission and reception channels and the speech and/or data information is transmitted in frequency-modulated form via the power supply mains (SVN) to the corresponding extension (NST...). The extension lines (NAL) are interconnected via the central adapter device (ZAE) and the extensions (NST...) via the external adapter device (AAE) by means of mains plugs (NST) via the mains connection (NA) with the power supply mains (SVN). Communications systems of this type are used in conjunction with family telephone systems.
