PURPOSE:To record plural files in one volume without increasing the load of an operating system by recording a file data in tracks classified at every file in a serpentine type magnetic type device. CONSTITUTION:In the serpentine type magnetic tape device, a magnetic head is shared for plural tracks according to its positioning like in a magnetic disk device. By changing a control method for the positioning of the magnetic head and writing, etc., the recording and reproducing of data is performed in the same running direction against all of the tracks and one file is recorded at every one track. For example, in a serpentine type magnetic tape having memory of 120 mega bytes and eight tracks, assuming that the increasing rate of the data volume due to the rewriting of the data is 50%, eight files are recorded simultaneously at the same magnetic tape when the data volume is under ten mega bytes and the rewriting of the file data can be performed at the same track.
