PURPOSE:To reduce the number of external power sources by connecting the armature of a drive motor of an electric railcar in series with series and shunt field windings to supply power from common external power supply means. CONSTITUTION:When an electric railcar is driven in a nonvoltage zone having no trolley wire, a switch 12 is first closed to connect the armature 5 and a series field winding 6 of a motor in series with a shunt field winding 7. The series circuit is connected through external power connecting terminal 10e, 10f with an external power source 11c. Current which flow to the armature 5 and the windings 6, 7 are simultaneously controlled by the power source 11c. Thus, the number of necessary external power sources can be reduced.
