PURPOSE:To read plural credit cards different in specification by discriminating an identification code to specify the specification mode of recording data then reading in byte unit the code having the bit length corresponding to said specification mode. CONSTITUTION:A 1-byte read subroutine constituting a card reading process program of a data processor checks first whether the head identification code STX of data is already supplied or not (41). If the code STX is not supplied yet, the code STX is read and the value of the code STX is decided (42, 43, 44) to set a mode flag showing the specification mode (45, 47, 48). Then a flag showing that the code STX is already supplied is set (48), then returned. Thus the code of a prescribed bit length is read (53-56, 63-66, 73-76) in byte unit in the next call according to a mode flag which is set at N with 41 (42).
