PURPOSE:To reduce a reactive current without increasing the harmonic current components at a power source side by combining the outputs of unit cycloconverters for superposing positive bias amounts and unit cycloconverters for superposing negative bias amounts. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of unit cycloconverters 11-16 are insulated at the input sides by a transformer 11, connected with an AC power source, and connected at the output sides in series. Two unit cycloconverters 11 and 12, 13 and 14, 15 and 16 form pairs, positive bias amounts of the cycloconverters 11-16 are superposed and negative bias amounts of the same amplitude of other unit cycloconverters are superposed for the AC voltage waveforms assigned to the cycloconverters 11-16 to obtain a combined output voltage having a target AC voltage waveform, and the polarity of the bias amount is inverted in response to the polarity of the output current.
