<p>PURPOSE:To improve monodomain formability or initial orientation by holding a specific liquid crystal or a comsn. contg. said liquid crystal in place between substrates provided with a uniaxial orientation treatment effect. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element has the cell structure sealed with the liquid crystalline compd. having the optically active group expressed by the formula or the liquid crystal compsn. contg. the liquid crystalline compd. having the optically active group expressed by the formula between a pair of the substrates. The smectic phase of the liquid crystal compd. or compsn. is formed by the phase transition from the phase on the higher temp. side than the smectic phase. The surface of at least one substrate of a pair of the substrates has the effect of preferentially arranging, in one direction, the molecular axis direction in contact with the boundary. The compsn. components which transfer the phases like isotropic phase-cholesteric phase-SmA-chiral smectic phase, isotropic phase-cholesteric phase-chiral smetic phase or isotropic phase- SmA-chiral smectic phase during the temp. decreasing process are used for the liquid crystal compsn.</p> |
