摘要 PURPOSE:To restrict a temperature rise at a central part of downstream side of a catalyst layer from being increased and improve a durability of carrier by a method wherein fuel is supplied to a cental part of the catalyst stored in a mixture flow passage. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst 2 is formed such that a plurality of cylindrical catalyst layers are concentrically and integrally made, and a hollow tube 5 having its downstream end closed is arranged at the central part of the catalyst. A cylindrical wick 8 is closely fitted to an inner surface of the hollow tube 5 and a fuel supplying pipe 9 is removably fitted to a hollow part of the wick 8. When the combustion of the catalyst is started, the catalyst 2 is heated up to a hot temperature under combustion heat, the nearer to the downstream side, the higher the central part of the catalyst. The fuel from the fuel supplying pipe 9 at first cools the downstream side of the catalyst 2, is reversed toward the upstream side through the wick 8 and is gradually gasified while removing the heat from the central part of the catalyst 2, with the result that the downstream side of the catalyst 2 and its central part are cooled to prevent the deterioration of the catalyst 2 and thus the life of the catalyst can excessively be increased.
