PRODUCTION OF FIBER-REINFORCED METALLIC COMPOSITE PREPREG

PURPOSE:To extend the life of a plating liquid and to speed up plating in the stage of producing the titled prepreg by an electroless plating method by dropping the electroless plating liquid to a fiber bundle for reinforcement impregnate the liquid into the bundle thereby facilitating the administration of an electroless plating operation. CONSTITUTION:The fiber bundle 4 for reinforcement which is formed of plural pieces of strands to a matrix shape is un-coiled and is impregnated with the electroless plating liquid 3 dropped thereto. The bundle is then heated by a heater 9 so that the matrix metal is formed on the surface of the fibers for reinforcement. Such fiber bundle is coiled. The rate of the plating liquid 3 to be dropped is so adjusted that the moving bundle 4 is thoroughly plated. The matrix metal may be formed as well by dropping the liquid 3 onto the bundle 3 to impregnate the liquid therein then heating the bundle to deposit the metal on the surface of the fibers for reinforcement and further subjecting the bundle to electroplating.
