PURPOSE:To obtain silicon carbide whiskers industrially, inexpensively and advantageously, by decomposing thermally a specific methylchlorodisilane at a high temperature. CONSTITUTION:A methylchlorodisilane shown by the formula (CH3)aSi2Cl6-a (a is 1-5 integer) is thermally decomposed. The methylchlorodisilane is obtained as a by-product in a direct synthetic method of methylchlorosilane by the reac tion between methyl chloride and metal silicon, but the methylchlorodisilane itself can be used as a raw material for silicone industry and has been aban doned, so it is easily obtainable and inexpensive. The methylchlorodisilane obtained by thermal decomposition of polymethylsilane or a substance obtained by chlorinating it may be used besides the by-product of direct synthesis of methylchlorosilane. The methylchlorodisilane may be a single compound, or a mixture of two or more methylchlorodisilanes. When a molar ratio of silicon atom and carbon in the raw material is controlled depending upon a reaction condition, various methylchlrodisilanes (compounds wherein a is different in the formula) are properly combined. |
