PURPOSE:To provide a bactericidal and mildewcidal agent containing a mixture of saponin and an acid such as acetic acid as an active component, effective to suppress the growth of mold and bacteria and prevent the generation of ill odor and harmless to human body. CONSTITUTION:Saponin (diluted usually 5-20 times, preferably about 100-50,000 times) is combined with an acid harmless to human body (especially preferably acetic acid having a concentration of preferably about 3-10%) to obtain the objective bactericidal and mildewcidal agent. The agent is effective to sufficiently suppress the growth of mold and bacteria caused by urea produced from sweat or by dead cells, and accordingly, suppress the generation of ill odor caused by the growth of mold, etc., and effective to prevent the inflammation of the skin. Since the bactericidal and mildewcidal agent is harmless to human body, it can be applied directly to the skin or impregnated in underwear, stockings, etc.
