PURPOSE:To distinguish easily handwritten characters from printed character, or recognition object characters from mere display characters, by providing position information of characters and also a field designating means of the kind of characters handwritten characters or printed characters, etc. CONSTITUTION:In a field designating part 1, position information of recognition object characters, namely, a field designation is executed through a format defining body 2. In this case, the kind of characters (handwritten character or printed character) is also designated. Next, in a recognition processing part 3, recognition processing is executed through a recognition dictionary 4, and its result is brought to character selection for display or printing through a character pattern dictionary 6, and inputted to an output control part 7. Thereafter, in a display output part 8, it is displayed on a display, or brought to printing output in a printing output part 9. In this way, a display or a printing output of a result of recognition is changed to an expression similar to a designated character form on a business form, therefore, characters can be distinguished easily.
