PURPOSE:To obtain an optical character reader to be easily used and prevented from misreading by recording control information in a reading area of a document by a color dropped out at the recognition of characters. CONSTITUTION:A character recognition and control device 2 has optical characteristics for reading out only an image written by a writing P2 through an accessory scanner 2A, reads out and recognizes control information 'O', '' and 'X' on a document supplied on a carrying course 1 directed from a hopper 1A to a stacker 1B and stores the recognized result in an inner memory 4 through a data bus 5. A character recognizing device 3 having optical characteristics for reading out only an image written by a writing tool P1 through an accessory scanner 3A recognizes characters in the character frame of the document which are read out from the recognized result stored in the inner memory 4 and format information of the kinds of characters previously specified in accordance with respective control information 'O', ' ' and 'X', e.g. alphabets in case of 'O', large letters of 'katakana' (square form of Japanese syllabary) in case of ' ' and small letters of 'katakana' in case of 'X'.
