Device for locking a steering column 5 which is adjustable in height, especially for road vehicles in which the column 5 is mounted on a bearing 6 securely fastened to a support 12 carried by the vehicle and rotationally mounted about a pivot 11 consisting of a control rod 31 which transmits a friction clamping force between the said bearings 6 and support 12 under the action of a lever 21 with a manoeuvring cam 22, characterised in that the control rod carries a preadjustment member 26 adjacent to the lever 21 with a cam 22 and in that the latter carries means 25 for actuating the preadjustment member 26. <IMAGE>
