A grit spreading device for motor vehicles has a grit container 1, a scatter duct leading to the vehicle wheel and a therein rotating conveyor belt 5. The conveyor belt 5 is situated in the first horizontal part 2 of the scatter duct and is divided by cross bars 8 into individual chambers 9. The outlet end of the conveyor belt 5 is above the top of the second part of the scatter duct, which second part comprises an outlet opening 4 and leads to a vehicle wheel and can be shut off with a flap 16. The drive mechanism 10 of the conveyor belt 5 is provided with a servo control, which stops the motor, after the switch has been turned off, only when the cross bar 8 of the conveyor belt 5 has reached the upper rotation quartile A of the conveyor belt drum 7 disposed at the outlet end. <IMAGE>
