PURPOSE:To enhance graininess and sharpness by incorporating silver halide grains having a specified average grain size not above a specified value and a specified compound in a blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion. CONSTITUTION:The blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion having the highest sensitivity in silver halide emulsion layers has an average grain size of <=0.4mum, and contains at least one of the compounds represented by formulae I and II, embodied by formulae I-1 and II-1, preferably, in an amount of 1X10<-4>-1X10<-2>mol per mol of silver halide. The use of the silver halide grains of such a size for the blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer located on the side nearest to the exposure light (when there are plural blue-sensitive emulsion layers different in sensitivity from each other, the emulsion layer highest in sensitivity) permits the reflection and diffusion of the exposure light reaching the underlying green-sensitive and red-sensitive emulsion layers to be reduced and graininess and sharpness of an image to be enhanced and the problem on deterioration of sensitivity accompanied with the reduction of grain size to be solved.
