PURPOSE:An expectorant acting on fluidity of sputum, especially on puriform sputum having low viscosity, promoting transportation by cilium, removing easily sputum by local administration, containing sodium N-acetylneuraminate as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:An expectorant containing sodium N-acetylneuraminate shown by the formula, acting on rheological properties of sputum, having promoting action on migration of sputum to the oral cavity side by motion of cilium, as an active ingredient. The active ingredient compound shown by the formula is obtained by neutralizing N-acetylneuraminic acid of a well-known compound with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate and separating the sodium salt from the system. As administration method, the active ingredient compound, for example, is pulverized, processed into a shape to be sucked in aerosol and used.
