PURPOSE:To automate the winding operation of a long material without entailing any damage, by adjusting a slender window hole in a circumferential bus direction of a winding core shaft, to a feed position of a leading end of the long material, while detecting insertion of the leading end into the window hole, and making a velocity of the circumferential surface of a spool equal to that for feeding the long material. CONSTITUTION:A slender window hole 5 in a circumferential bus direction of a winding core shaft 4 of a takeup spool 1 is congruous with a groove 25 on an output shaft of a motor M. When a guide member 19 rotating up and down centering on a fulcrum shaft 10 is situated in a lowermost position, the groove 25 is opposed to a leading end 26 of a long material 8, stopping the output shaft 7, and the presence of this leading end 26 inside the groove 25 is detected by a detecting device 27, thus a driving gear for a belt 19 of the member 9, the velocity controlling type motor M and a detector 24 are all operated. Winding takes place in a state that a velocity of feeding the long material 8 by the member 9 is equal to that on the circumferential surface of the side of the shaft 4, and with this winding, an upward turning angle of the member 9 is detected by the detector 24 and thereby a revolving speed of the motor M is controlled.
