PURPOSE:To collate a direction code rationally in accordance with features of patterns to be collated, by using a direction code successive to each direction code of dictionary-side standard patterns to perform collation. CONSTITUTION:With respect to each direction code of dictionary-side standard patterns, a range of the value of the direction code which discriminates whether input is matched or not is determined in accordance with relations to the value of the direction successive to this direction code. This range is stored as a threshold on a memory; and if the value of the input direction code is within the range of the value of the threshold corresponding to the direction code of the standard pattern to be compared in case of collation between the input direction code and direction codes o standard patterns, it is discriminated that the input direction code is matched to the direction code of the standard pattern, and it is discriminated whether the direction code following said direction code is within the range of the value of the threshold, and this operation is repeated.
