The transportable press for intense compaction of radioactive waste materials from nuclear power stations has two shells (5, 5') which are connected to one another in an articulated fashion and between which the material to be pressed is to be pressed to form a packet. These shells (5, 5') are constructed with a U-shaped cross-section and surround therewith a pressing chamber which has a quadrilateral cross-section. This results in pressed bodies in the shape of cuboids or cubes, which are to be stored lying with their sides closely adjacent and one above another, so that no free spaces remain between them, which increase the disposal costs due to insufficient utilisation of the storage space. <IMAGE>
