The invention relates to a method for operating a thermo-pneumatic engine, including: a cylinder (2) comprising an intake valve (3), an exhaust valve (4), and a loading/relief valve (5); and a tank (8) connected to the cylinder (2). The intake valve (3) is closed and the exhaust valve (4) is opened at predetermined moments during an engine cycle, thereby defining an actual compression and expansion ratio, respectively. The method includes a step of selecting a combustion mode or a pneumatic mode, characterized in that, for the selected operating mode, the method includes a step of controlling the moment when the intake valve closes and/or the moment when the exhaust valve opens during the engine cycle, so as to adjust the actual compression ratio and/or actual expansion ratio, respectively, in order to optimize the efficiency of the selected mode.
