PURPOSE:To detect the size of an original securely with a simple, low-cost constitution and to reduce deterioration in the durability of a connection wire by providing a engaging means which intermits the driving force transmission independently between a driving means and a scanner, and the driving means and a size detection scanner. CONSTITUTION:The 1st engaging device 16 operates to engage a scanner with a driving wire in copying operation and the scanner 7 makes a scan according to the driving wire 11. When original size detection operation is entered, the 2nd engaging device 17, i.e. an electromagnetic brake 21 and an electromagnetic brake armature 22 operate to engage a scanner with the driving wire 11, so that the scanner 15 begins to move toward a reference position Po according to the driving of the driving wire 11. At this time, a lamp 20 is on and photosensors 19a and 19b perform the size detection from whether there is reflected light from the original 1 or not. When the size detection is completed, the size detection scanner 15 returns to its original position and the 2nd engaging device 17 is released to disengage the scanner from the driving wire 11.
