An ophthalmic preparation having an enhanced ability to permit essentially normal maintenance of ocular surface mucus-containing goblet cells while present in the eye, comprises a solution, ointment or gel generally having a pH of 7.0 to 8.0 and optionally being isotonic, the preparation including sodium and chloride as major constituents and lesser amounts of potassium and bicarbonate; optionally, the preparation includes one or more of calcium, magnesium phosphate.
