PURPOSE:To accurately measure the outer diameter of a wire rope during running, by irradiating a wire material with pulse light and projecting the shade thereof to an image sensor. CONSTITUTION:When a scanning control circuit 4 outputs a light emitting timing signal (a) and light is emitted from a floodlight projector 2 to be incident to an image sensor 3, the cross-sectional length of a wire material 1 is projected to the sensor 3 as a shade. Immediately thereafter, a pulse (b) is inputted to the sensor 3 from the circuit 4 and the light receiving data therein is amplified as a pulse row by an amplifying circuit 5 while a counter circuit 6 inputs the signal (d) from the circuit 4 simultaneously with the starting of the output of the pulse (b) to start count operation. The output (c) of the amplifying circuit 5 measures the length of the time of a signal free state held between pulse rows and outputs the same as the length measuring data showing the cross-sectional length of the wire material. After one measurement of the length, the circuit 4 measures the cross-sectional length of the next position of the wire material 1 during running in the same order to issue output from the counter circuit 6. As mentioned above, the length measuring data are successively outputted and the max. value thereof is detected at every definite time by a max. value operation circuit 7 and said value shows the long diameter of the wire material.
