PURPOSE:To decide the circumscribing rectangle of a connecting component only with scanning a picture once by storing the picture data of the present and an immediately preceding scanning lines in a line buffer and storing the required information based on the memory content in other line buffer to extract the prescribed rectangular information. CONSTITUTION:The picture data of the present time and an immediately preceding scanning lines of the picture data 10 are stored in line buffers 21, 20, respectively. Based on the contents stored in these buffers 21, 20, a circumscribing rectangle extracting part 30 judges the lateral expansion of a connecting component of the picture information and the start position of the connecting component and stores in the second incorporated line buffer. Further, in third incorporated line buffer of the extracting part 30, the relation information of the contents of the buffers 20, 21 is stored and from the contents of the first, the second and the third line buffers, the rectangular information circumscribing with the connecting component is taken out. Accordingly, only by scanning once, the circumscribing rectangle of the connecting component can be rapidly decided.
