PURPOSE:To attain small-sized, lightweight and inexpensive constitution by using an optical fiber lens array to form an image of an original on an image sensor having the same width as that of the original. CONSTITUTION:The original 1 put into a slit 10 is carried to the right in this figure by carrying rollers 11, 11, 11. The original 1 is lighted by light sources 12, 12 such as fluorescent light, a light emitting diode (LED) array or an electric field lighting element and the image of its reflected light is formed onto a long image sensor 14 having the same width as that of the original 1 by using an optical fiber lens array 13 and a light signal is converted into an electric signal. Since the width of the original of the read section 2 calls at least for the same width of the original 1, since the long image sensor 13 and the optical fiber lens array 13 are used, the height of the read section 2 is selected below 15-20cm and the portable image reader with small size and lightweight is realized.
