PURPOSE:To reduce production of smoke, by a method wherein, in a device in which an on-off valve located in an intake passage is opened in the middle of an intake stroke and an intake air temperature is increased through heat insulation compression, fuel fed to the downstream of the on-off valve is decreased during failure in operation of the on-off valve. CONSTITUTION:An on-off valve 10 is located in an intake passage 8 of each of cylinders running to a diesel engine, introduction of intake air to a combus tion chamber 3 is limited by the on-off valve to the middle of an intake stroke, and the intake air is introduced to the combustion chamber 3 suddenly from the intake stroke to perform heat insulation compression. Further, the on-off valve 10 is adapted to be closed about at the bottom dead point of a piston 2, and following opening and closing motion is effected through the working of an on-off valve driving means 11 by means of an output signal from a CPU 12. The CPU 12, when a negative pressure detected by a negative sensor 13 under the operative condition of the on-off valve 10 is increased over a set value, decides that the on-off valve 10 is brought into a trouble in that the valve is not fully opened, and decreases an amount of fuel injected through a fuel injection valve 23 when the valve is decided to fail in operation.
