PURPOSE:To prevent a time up to the start of copying operation from becoming long owing to size detection by scanning a scanner from the position opposite from a reference position to the reference position side in original size detection mode and performing the size detecting operation. CONSTITUTION:When the size detection mode is entered, the scanner 7 moves from the reference position Po to a maximum scanning position Pe on the opposite side and enters a stand-by state wherein it waits for a next indication. For example, when the next indication for the start of copying operation is sent, the scanner 7 begins to scan toward the reference position and the original size detection is carried out when the scanner returns to the reference position Po. Thus, the original size detection is performed during the return scanning from the position opposite from the reference position or during the preliminary scanning of the scanner from the reference position, so that the scanner is returned from a detection position to the reference position immediately. Consequently, the time required for the original size detection is shortened without any hindrance to the copying operation.
