PURPOSE:To automate the assembling of parts and to accurately detect a stamped branded as inferior product position, by optically detecting the positional shift of minute parts of which the mechanical alignment is impossible because the parts are too minute. CONSTITUTION:The image signal obtained by picking up the image of an objective substance 1 by an image pickup apparatus 6 is converted to digital quantity by an A/D converter 9 in synchronous relation to the synchronous signal of the apparatus 6 and the signal thereof is stored in the address corresponding to the two-dimensional coordinates of a memory 10. Subsequently, an image signal is successively read from the memory 10 and a threshold value is calculated from the average value of a region high in an image signal level and that of a region low in said image signal and the objective substance 1 and the peripheral background part thereof are divided on the basis of said threshold value and, further, the specific object in the divided objective substance 1 is extracted by signal processing and the positional shift signal of the object is calculated from the data relating to the extracted object. The quality of the shape of the object or the mark preliminarily applied to an inferior product is detected by the image signal of the extracted object.
