PURPOSE:To simultaneously record and reproduce a video signal and a PCM audio signal by adding a new rotating head. CONSTITUTION:Heads 1A, 1B and a drum 3 or the like are used to a VTR of U standard and heads 2A, 2B are added thereto. In a tape 6, signals Sa, Sb are alternately recorded as magnetic tracks 6A, 6B by the heads 1A, 1B and and at a track pitch twice as high as the track pitch in the VTR of the U standard. Signals Si, Sj are alternately recorded as short magnetic tracks 6I, 6J by heads 2A, 2B and between the tracks 6A, 6B. By a magnetic head 7, a control pulse is recorded on an edge part of the tape 6. Thus, the recorded tape 6 becomes a mother tape.
