NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is 2-12C straight chain alkyl or alkoxy; * is asymmetric carbon).&R(+)-4-[4'-(2-Methylbutyloxy) benzoyl]resorcylidene 4-octylaniline. USE:A liquid crystal substance, having properties of quick response of the molecular orientation to the influence of an electric field and utilizable as a electrooptical switching element having ferroelectricity. PREPARATION:(+)-4-[4'-(2-Methylbutyloxy)bezoyl]resorcylaldehyde expressed by formula II is condensed with a 4-alkyl(or alkoxy)aniline in a solvent, e.g. ethanol, through dehydration to give the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
