PURPOSE:To obtain the titled cobalt salt suitable as an adhesion promoter of the rubber and the metallic cord of steel tire, by carrying out the double decomposition reaction of an alkali metal salt of a resin acid and a cobalt salt of an acid, and separating the obtained metal salt without using solvent- extraction process. CONSTITUTION:An alkali metal salt of a resin acid and a cobalt salt of a monobasic acid (preferably cobalt chloride or cobalt acetate) are subjected to the double decomposition reaction at <=50 deg.C. The obtained metal salt is separated without using solvent-extraction process and dried at <=60 deg.C. The objective cobalt salt produced by the above process has a melting point of 140-180 deg.C, an oxidation degree of <=60% by gas chromatography and a sulfur concentration of <=2,000ppm in the metal salt. The toluene-insoluble fraction of the metal salt exhibits an infrared absorption spectrum having a characteristic absorption near 3,600cm<-1> and endothermic peaks at 250-350 deg.C and 300-420 deg.C when heated in a differential scanning calorimeter at a heating rate of 5 deg.C/min.
