PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbide derived from a vegetable raw material having little volatile matter, having a high oxygen content and a large specific surface area, and having a sufficiently-reduced content of a metal element and/or a non-metallic element; and to provide a method for producing such a carbide at a comparatively low temperature with a high recovery rate.SOLUTION: A vegetable raw material is subjected to thermal carbonization in acid aqueous solution at the temperature of 150-350°C.SELECTED DRAWING: None
