PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a coating compound, etc., having improved water resistance, chemical resistance and good workability, by reacting a specific epoxy resin with a specific amount of phenol and esterifying both end groups of the reaction product with an alpha,beta-unsaturated polybasic acid (anhydride). CONSTITUTION:An epoxy resin shown by the formula I (R is H or CH3; n is 0-3) is reacted with phenol in an amount (0.5-1 equivalent based on phenolic hydroxyl group) to eliminate an epoxy group in the epoxy resin preferably in the presence of a curing promoter (e.g., benzyldimethylamine, etc.). Then, both end hydroxyl groups of the reaction product are esterified with an alpha,beta-unsaturated polybasic acid (anhydride) (e.g., fumaric acid, etc.) in an inert gas flow at 180-220 deg.C to give the aimed compound shown by the formula II (m is 2-20). Addition of a small amount of a polymerization inhibitor such as hydroquinone, etc. to the compound is required to prevent gelatinization.
