An impact tool comprises two wheels, F, F' arranged on the opposite sides of a hammer rod R and they can rotate in opposite directions in order to actuate the hammer rod when the wheels move until peripheral coupling with the hammer rod is established. The wheels are actuated by a single motor 54 via pairs of pulleys 62, 21; 62', 21' interconnected by actuating belts 65, 65'. The movement of the wheels towards the hammer rod uncouples the drive by means of slackening of the belts, so that the wheels rotate under their own inertia when applied to the hammer rod.
