PURPOSE:To detect easily a line speed by detecting normally a prescribed character in the start-stop system. CONSTITUTION:A control program 1a stored in a gate way 1 instructs a line controller 3, which is connected to the gate way 1 through a control signal line 2, to set the line speed and the other information and receive characters in the start-stop system. The controller 3 transfers characters sent from a no- procedure terminal 5 through a transmission line 4 to the program 1a, and the program 1a discriminates whether there are reception characters or not, and the success in detection of the line speed is discriminated to terminate detection if it is discriminated that there are reception characters and the pre scribed character for line control is received twice continuously. In case of the failure in detection of the line speed, the program 1a instructs the controller 3 to receive characters in the next line speed.
