PURPOSE:To permit the stable operation over a wide temp. range and to take the larger number of time divisions by using the AC voltage of which the voltage waveform is biased to either one positive or negative direction rather than the AC waveform symmetrical on the positive and negative for the voltage to be impressed to a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:The waveform (gamma) of the driving voltage is not the waveform of an AC voltage but is the waveform of the voltage of which the polarity is in the negative direction. The transmission characteristic of the liquid crystal is as shown by (c) if the liquid crystal is driven by such voltage waveform. Then the quantity of the transmitted light increases. More specifically, the state of the decreased quantity of the transmitted light is maintained by impressing the voltage to the liquid crystal in such a manner that both the positive and negative polarities are applied to the on waveform of said voltage waveform as far as possible. The decrease in the quantity of the transmitted light is suppressed by impressing the voltage in such a manner that the voltage of either positive or negative polarity is applied to the off waveform. The range for driving the liquid crystal is thus expanded.
