PURPOSE:To obtain the structure of a thin film magnetic head which obviates the decrease of a track width during reproduction by forming the surface of the head to slidingly contact with a medium in such a manner that the length of the upper and lower magnetic layers thereof in the track width direction is larger than a desired track width, that the magnetic gap length in the part corresponding to the length of the desired track width is uniform and that the magnetic gap length in the part except said parts gently increases. CONSTITUTION:The thin film magnetic head constituted by successively laminating the lower magnetic layer, nonmagnetic gap material, nonmagnetic inter layer material, metallic conductor layer and upper magnetic layer is so constructed that the length of the gap 14 consisting of the nonmagnetic material is uniform in the part where the length (Tomega+W) in the track width direction of a wing type magnetic core corresponds to the desired track width and that the length gradually increases in the other parts except said part.
