PURPOSE:To display an image having good quality with high resolution by providing an optical element having a heating element for heating an org. compd. molecular film having a hydrophobic part and hydrophilic part, driving means for driving said heating element and signal output means for outputting the signal corresponding to image information CONSTITUTION:The desired position of the heating element 2 is heated to generate a propery change in the heated part 5 of the monomolecular film or cumulative layer 3 of the monomolecular layers on the heated element 2. The optical path is changed or scattering is generated by the light passing through the part except the heated part 5 and the light passing through the heated part 6 if illuminating light 7 which is parallel light is made incident on the optical element from the substrate 1 side. Such change is directly or indirectly detected and displayed. More specifically the change of the optical path from the optical path prior to the formation of the heated part 5 which is made by the formation of the heated part 5 is utilized. A wide range of phase transfer type org. compds. having the hydrophobic part and hydrophilic part in the molecules are usable for the molecules constituting the molecular film.
