PURPOSE:To enhance strength of a wire in a high temperature so as to prevent its break and improve machining speed, by providing a copper-zinc alloy layer, so that concentration of zinc increases toward a surface layer, on the core material of a copper coated steel wire further a hydroxide film in the outer of said copper-zinc alloy layer. CONSTITUTION:A copper coated steel wire 11, in which a steel wire is coated with copper by a 10-70% coating rate, is used as a core material, and an electrode wire provides a copper-zinc alloy layer 12 in 0.1-15mum thickness on the peripheral surface of said steel wire 11. The copper-zinc alloy layer 12 provides averaged concentration of zinc of 10% or more and less than 50% by weight while a concentration gradient so that concentration of zinc increases toward a surface layer from a copper foundation. The electrode wire, further providing a hydroxide film 13 in a thickness range of 0.1-5mum in the outer of the copper-zinc alloy layer 12, forms a diameter to about 0.2mm as a whole.
